Everything You Need to Know About Thread Count

Everyone hears a lot of babble about thread count being the be-all-end-all, but how important is it really? The simple answer is the lower the thread count, the lighter the sheet, the higher the thread count, the heavier the sheet. But, that said, a good sheet is one that feels great to the touch, and that’s your preference.

Is thread count important? Yes, thread count is an important factor to consider when buying bed linen. Typically, cotton materials with a higher thread count are warmer, more durable, softer or soften well over time - up to a point. But don’t just rely on thread count to indicate quality, the type of yarn and the finishing process are also equally important.

Thread count is a measure of how many threads are woven into one square inch of fabric. The yarn is woven in a crisscross pattern with the vertical strands being referred to as warp weave, and the horizontal pieces are called weft weave.

Thread count is the total number of yarns per square inch of fabric. A high thread count is often associated with high quality fabric because it’s thought to make the sheets softer and more durable, but the truth is other factors like the fiber quality and weave are more important.

When shopping for bedding, you’ll notice that there is a lot of talk about thread count, and it is often stated that a higher thread count equals better sheets. It is true that sheets with a high thread count will be softer and will probably wear well over time, but there are several other factors to consider when choosing bedding.  Thread count matters, but it’s not the only thing to pay attention to.

After all, you’re the one who has to sleep on it. Choose wisely!
